[for a moment, a woman's face is simply staring out at the broadcast, consideringly, as though not sure it's started yet. she's in her early twenties, Hispanic, her dark hair braided, and dressed in the uniform of resort security]
[realizing from the display on the screen that the broadcast must have started, she says:] Hello. [the word is a bit uncertain. she swallows, trying to mask her nerves, and continues more calmly:] I'm Linda Esquivel. I'm from Chester's Mill, Maine. [there's a beat of hesitation, as she wonders if she should give more information than that, but she ultimately decides to leave the description as it is] I just got here a couple days ago, and I've joined the security patrol. I was a sheriff's deputy back home. [and sheriff, but she doesn't think two days of that job due to the disaster that happened really counts, so she leaves her credentials at that]
I thought you should know who I am in case you see me around. And, uh, I'd like to start meeting people, too--and learn a little more about this place. I've never seen anything like it before. [another pause as she debates how to end an open message like this. finally, she goes with:] I'm here if you'd like to talk.

I have some things I'd like to make sure you knew about before you got out there, into the thick of it.
no subject
[she nods, eager to please her new boss] Sure. Would it be easier to meet somewhere? I'm at the resort right now.

[and sure enough, she goes straight to the office from her room, glad to have something potentially useful to do. she knocks on his office door] Sir? It's Linda.

[It doesn't ring a bell. But she looks human, and her name sounds like a human name, and he knows the title "sheriff" was used in various human cultures.]
Is that an Earth colony?
no subject
[and even though she's sure the answer will mean nothing to her, she still asks the question that seem natural] Where are you from?
no subject
Gallifrey. In the constellation of Kasterborous.
no subject
[she nods, not really sure how else to react to somewhere she's never heard of nor has any idea what to even ask about. after all, where she's from, a family coming through from as far away as Los Angeles was an event] Have you been here for long? And I didn't catch your name.

You seem maybe first generation immigrant? Second maybe?
no subject
[and since both his accent and his interest have made his own immigrant status clear, she asks:] Where are you from? Originally and before...here, I mean.
no subject
My cousin-in-law, Mallorie, she is second generation Puerto Rican. She has more of a city accent now but you can kind of tell in how she speaks. Bilingual from birth.
I'm from the Balkans.
no subject
I can't say I know anyone from there, but what city? Where were you living?

I just got in for patrol a few days ago myself, so I'd be delighted to meet up and pool resources. The bar, perhaps?

Always good to have more people with us. I'm Boone. I'm with patrol too. If you've got questions, I can try to help out.

Hey. This is Jade. [Her voice is curt, as if she's making a conscious decision to be reserved.] I'm a photographer and an explorer here.

I used to be a courier back home, though. The jobs are different enough, but it's the same kind of stuff I used to do in my free time, mostly. With a lot more direction, sure, but... I dunno. I'm liking it anyway. [A sheepish smile.]
no subject
I'm glad to hear you're liking your job. I...get the impression this is going to be a little different from what I did back home, but honestly I haven't really gotten a good idea of what it's like yet.
