[By the looks of things, Lindir is sitting down in a high backed chair in one of Blackstaff's guest rooms. He says nothing, but continues poking at the screen, furrowing his brows and frowning. As there's a beep from the device, he turns his head to listen to it, then looks back again. He lets out a deep sigh. This was going to be a lot harder than he thought it would be. Why did he ever agree to this?]

Something like that happened to my people not too long. It has turned me off of the whole war thing.

If you ever really get away from someone trying to start something, that is. [He doesn't know if you can, and he sounds doubtful.] What was it over? This ah... Kinslaying? That's actually a pretty better word than is Civil War ["pretty better word than is"? Eh, moving on from his lingual failure there] I know enough English to know that nothing about war is civil.

[He's a little confused about the term - not to mention the sentence structure, but Lindir sticks to the question at hand.]

The Silmarils, that is, jewels crafted by Fëanor with the light of the Two Trees locked within them. They were coveted by many, and lives were lost as those who desired to posses them fought. If I were to repeat the whole of the history it would be long in the telling, but the three Silmarils now rest far beyond reach. The Elves of Middle-earth no longer have any desire to wage war against one another.

[A pause.]

There are other dangers more worthy of our concern.

Good to know you're not that different. A lot of place fight over resources or important things. In some old stories, wars were even started over women.

Not any other dangers that have been seen here, I hope? I think some of the politicians are worried we'll bring things with us.

[Lindir goes a little pale at the thought of any of the current horrors of Middle-earth being here. If that was the case, he would have preferred Lord Elrond keep him in Imladris where at least there were the comforts of familiarity.]

I have neither seen nor heard word of The Enemy or his minions here, thankfully. There is certainly no threat of an Orc having arrived with me. I do believe I would have noticed.

You look like an Orc would be a pretty big problem if we had it.

[He's not doubtful, but he's paranoid enough to want to know how to get rid of them if the situation calls for it.]

Yes, they are dreadful things, twisted, merciless creatures and users of foul poisons.

[He had stood beside Elrond too many times attending to the wounded and those sickened by the tainted blades... Lindir did indeed fear Orcs, but they disgusted him more.]

Foul poisons. Foul poisons like drugs? [Which are a pet peeve of Niko's.] Or foul poisons like um...

Like actual poisons I guess.

They coat their blades or arrowheads with a substance that will render one very ill if it breaks skin. If not treated quickly it is likely one will perish.

Okay, actual poisons.

Bullets? Not really great for that sort of thing. That is what our wars are fought with so not something we have to worry about. But I get your meaning.

I'm sorry, what are bullets?

[It was obviously a new term to this Elf.]

Metal that you put in a metal tube. When you spark the black powder behind it, it makes a lot of pressure, and it goes through like a dart. It shoots with much more force than an arrow, noisier too if you don't have a suppressor.

[Lindir wasn't exactly a fan of weapons, so he's having difficulty wrapping his head around the description.]

...How strange. Won't the noise attract attention?

Yes, but usually by the time you shoot the battle is on.

Unless you have a sniper scope and shoot from far away.

I suppose if the battle has already begun, noise will not matter, but it is better to avoid the conflict altogether if possible.

[small sigh.]

If I had to protect myself, I think I would prefer a sword, but my skill with a blade is immature at best. I have not had much need to practice.

Wherever you find old bitter people afraid to lose power, you will find conflict.

I am pretty good with hand to hand. But we don't generally use swords anymore. I can use a knife, and disarm someone of one.

In the end, it is better to avoid battle all together. Let us hope there will be no such conflict here.

Maybe at least less conflict. [Since he already knows there's a slight rivalry existing.]

[Something about that statement worried him. Granted, it was easy to cause Lindir to worry.]

What do you mean? Are there troubles here?

Not many, but enough.

People are suspecting that someone is wanting to attack this political thing. [He has a feeling if he gets into talking about the crime syndicates he will say too much, so he doesn't. It's safer that way.]

[Well, that was a little upsetting. Elrond's instructions were for Lindir to 'enjoy himself' after all, and this certainly wasn't conducive to that.]

That is not good news at all. Do the rumors tell of where they might attack?

Not at all. Just that there are people saying they want attention.

I know a couple of guys in security. I'm sure they won't let anything happen.

[Which is funny, because he usually doesn't like "cops". Maybe it's because they're not especially coppish, and they've come from backgrounds where they've had to work hard to survive.]

Then for the time being I will trust that the security here will protect.
