[domesheriff]

[for a moment, a woman's face is simply staring out at the broadcast, consideringly, as though not sure it's started yet. she's in her early twenties, Hispanic, her dark hair braided, and dressed in the uniform of resort security]

[realizing from the display on the screen that the broadcast must have started, she says:] Hello. [the word is a bit uncertain. she swallows, trying to mask her nerves, and continues more calmly:] I'm Linda Esquivel. I'm from Chester's Mill, Maine. [there's a beat of hesitation, as she wonders if she should give more information than that, but she ultimately decides to leave the description as it is] I just got here a couple days ago, and I've joined the security patrol. I was a sheriff's deputy back home. [and sheriff, but she doesn't think two days of that job due to the disaster that happened really counts, so she leaves her credentials at that]

I thought you should know who I am in case you see me around. And, uh, I'd like to start meeting people, too--and learn a little more about this place. I've never seen anything like it before. [another pause as she debates how to end an open message like this. finally, she goes with:] I'm here if you'd like to talk.

They latch on that fast? [she's surprised] Well, it's good that they're so loyal. If they have a talent for guarding, I suppose we're lucky they're not more feral.

[domesheriff]

Who's changing it up? People out to kill everyone? [her tone is incredulous]

[but she nods at his thanks, saying nothing. it's her job now, after all]

[givessweetness]

You haven't been briefed? [He did assume she'd do that before arriving. At least... he didn't feel like he acted like he was in charge...]

[domesheriff]

Sounds like a hot spot. [her tone is dry, but she's also glad for the heads up]

Always good in our line of work. [she smiles a little. Boone sounds both knowledgeable and practical, and he strikes her as someone she's going to enjoy working with]

[domesheriff]

[she makes a face] Oh, that. I...heard a little about it. [she glances around, not sure how much to say in public, and leaves it at that] But it doesn't sound like this place thinks much of us in the first place, either. [she frowns, taking another drink] Hopefully that sort of news won't turn things ugly.

[because she definitely didn't come here expecting to immediately have to quell a riot]

[ratkicker]

We'll be able to handle that. [Animals were simple to control and to fight back. People? That takes much longer.]

Nice too meet you, too. [She hopes that Linda meant that in a friendly manner.]

[givessweetness]

No, I suppose not. [There's a slight, automatic shrug. Wynter isn't really concerned with popularity. Just order.]

It's part of our jobs, really, to keep it from getting quite that bad.

[vengeance_driven]

Yeah. I guess. They only seem to want to eat or attack a couple of animals out in the wild, and then just for food. If you hurt one that's not tamed, it will come after you, and its pack, too. So be good to them or just ignore them.

[most_feared]

I don't know.

We got three good guides, though. Elle Dayes, Tuco Ramirez, and Niko Bellic. You should be able to ask them for advice on fending off any of the aggressive wildlife. Boone's been around doin' it for a while, too. So I'd prefer that you stayed in the village for investigating until you've actually trained a little under one of them.

[thumbsdown]

Yeah, no kidding.

[He doesn't smile back, but that's just how he is. He at least figures Linda is someone who knows what she's doing, and he won't mind working with her.]

Anything else you wanted to know about?

[If she has more questions, he may as well answer them while they're talking.]

[domesheriff]

[she nods, fiddling with the engagement ring on her finger as she thinks about what to ask. since Wynter is also new, she has a feeling he probably doesn't know much more about the town than she does, so she decides to ask about him instead] So you said you just got here? Mind if I ask where you're from?

[givessweetness]

Gallifrey. It's, ah. A planet a few galaxies away from Earth, I think. [Well, he's never actually needed to know.]

[domesheriff]

[she nods] If they're not attacking the people here, then I wasn't planning on it. And Pas looks friendly enough. [she smiles at the dog] I'll have to actually meet him sometime. Huh, buddy?

[domesheriff]

[she wasn't expecting that, especially since Boone was just telling her that taking care of the wildlife is a big part of their job, but she doesn't protest. she supposes she should have expected the new job to require at least some training, after all] All right. I'll talk to them and see if anyone's willing to take me out with them. Otherwise, I'll see what I can do for the investigation.

[domesheriff]

[she pauses thoughtfully] Not...that I can think of right now. Except maybe a good place to get a bite to eat, if you know anywhere cheap that's worth it.

[having lived in the same small town her whole life, she's finding it difficult to even figure out where to start getting acclimatized to somewhere so different]

[domesheriff]

[she's surprised when he gives a name she recognizes] Oh yeah, I think I met someone else from there. Narvin? [she's not sure if coming from the same planet is enough evidence to assume they know each other, but she figures it's worth mentioning]

Do you...know Earth, then? [the question is a bit awkward; she's still not really sure how to talk about different planets yet]

[vengeance_driven]

[Pas ruffs and shakes himself, and he looks like he's probably at least St. Bernard big. Niko gives him a big heavy pat- the ones meant to thump the dog like a drum as much as pet it. Obviously it doesn't mind.]

Sure. I think he'd like that.

[thumbsdown]

[He looks thoughtful for a moment.]

Know a couple places. Could show them to you, if you want.

[He's hungry anyway, so he might as well take a break and get something to eat.]

[givessweetness]

[Wynter just nods at that. He knows him. Not much to say about him, mind you.]

I know of it. I've never been.

[domesheriff]

[she smiles] Then that's a plan. Good to meet you, Niko.

[domesheriff]

[she's surprised to get an offer instead of just a suggestion of somewhere for her to go, but she looks glad for it all the same] If you're up for it, sure. Where should I meet you?

[domesheriff]

[at this baffling concept, she nods like it's not surprising. she supposes, in the grand scheme of things, that it shouldn't be; there must be a lot of planets out there, after all. but she's still adjusting to the idea that any sentient life exists out in space, and it's taking her a bit. she pauses to take another drink]

So what's Gallifrey like?

[givessweetness]

[For a beat, Wynter doesn't know what to say. When your universe is essentially Gallifrey, not a lot thought goes into describing it.]

Well, it's… very beautiful. Silver trees and red grass, um… the main city is the Capitol. And that's stood for millennia… I mean, it was destroyed once or twice, but we built over it…

[How's he does?]

[domesheriff]

That sounds... [different? beautiful? she's not sure what to say. her universe was Chester's Mill, so she can commiserate with Wynter's uncertainty about how to talk to outsiders] ...like something. It's a huge city, then?

[thumbsdown]

[He doesn't often offer to do that kind of thing, but since she's part of patrol now he feels like he should make more of an effort to get to know her.]

Outside the station. I'll be there soon.

[And he abruptly turns off his communicator. He's not really one for goodbyes when they're just going to see each other in a moment anyway. He gets to the station fairly quickly, and stands outside smoking until Linda arrives.]
