On the top floors of this resort, in the conference rooms and penthouse suites, even now the politicians and diplomats are discussing whether or not they'd like to go gallivanting around our universes, and we aren't allowed even a cursory peep at what they're talking about, much less a formal seat at the table.

[Small grenade of political discontent lobbed, Narvin switches topic.]

Also, I want to make it known preemptively that yes, I am a technician and computer specialist, but no, I will not fix your personal computer, communicator, speeder, spawner, or whatever else you brought with you. I'm a researcher, not a common mechanic. [Actually, he might fix your computer, if he likes you. But Narvin doesn't like many people as a general rule. ~~He also might offer to repair it if he thinks that you might have interesting files on your files that he might hack, but that's another matter.~~]

That depends entirely on the work in question. Manual labor isn't my strength, no.

So you'll try and wind everyone up and then get out of the way when they start to become a nuisance. Or you'll fail and just end up looking like a bit of a blowhard.

I am simply voicing a valid political opinion. Or do you not approve of that sort of thing? [Narvin's voice is clipped, sharp in response to Una's needling.]

Oh, I love political opinions. And in fact I can't say I completely disagree with you.

I just find your current methods highly amusing and unlikely to accomplish much.

...You don't? [What is this strange thing? Open agreement is not a thing that happens often in the midst of a disagreement.

I won't lie, I'm keen to know what's being said myself. In fact, I may very well go ask, instead of standing around talking about how nice it would be to know.

And then you're restricted to only whatever they decide to tell you, which may or may not bear resemblance to the truth. Assuming they tell you anything at all.

So you have to read between the lines. And if that fails, well, there's always petty larceny.

[Is she joking? Probably.]

[Narvin favours petty larceny for his information gathering needs. Reading between the lines is too open to misinterpretation, but a stolen file is nice hard evidence.

[For a certain kind of cynical and perceptive person, this is basically admitting that she's not joking at all.]

[Narvin is certainly cynical, and can be perceptive when his preconceived ideologies aren't getting in the way.
