[Tauriel has been pretty busy lately with her various tasks, projects and self imposed duties, so it's been awhile since she actively appeared to talk to anyone on her own terms. Currently she was outside-- possibly on a rooftop as there seems to be nothing but sky behind her.]

I have been studying a great many things lately in an attempt to better understand the world of technology and industry. Unfortunately, I think I have gone as far as I can on my own without some sort of guidance. Even suggestions on what subjects I should focus on will be of help.

There is something else I would also like some assistance with as well, though I think there will be fewer people who can help me. Up until now I have fought using bow and dagger--to great effect, but I am interested in learning other means of combat, such as the use of firearms? There is the tiniest frown as s he says the word "firearms" [It had taken her nearly an hour to come to terms that it was an actual word.] I feel as part of the security team, such skills would be beneficial to have.

Well, it's a place that very lonely people go to look for some company. It is a reasonable exercise. Many people do it to keep it in shape and acrobats use it in performances but- in that place it is meant for something different.

[There are no such things as brothels in the Woodland Realm and very few in any city of man either. They are an all but foreign concept in the world of Arda.]

So it is a place for them to make friends then? What is so bad about that? The pole looked like it was meant for display. Is it for games and challenges of acrobatic skill? If so I am certain I could win!

Not exactly. It is more like they buy a wedding night for a few hours, just without the wedding part. [He can't bring himself to be more explicit in front of an elf. He can't. He doesn't have the strength.]

[The concept is completely lost on her. Since the wedding night is the wedding. The ceremony is more or less for show. So how does one only have a wedding for a few hours? Her look says it all. Or at the very least it says WTF?]

[She still does not get how someone can have sex and not end up married. It's not just a cultural thing, but a definitive way of life for her people. That others can be so free is... mind boggling.]

You looked like you were, actually. But yes, it is probably not the right place for you. For someone like me? Sure- but that time my intentions were of honor. I wanted to help someone out. I wasn't meaning to waste your time while I was with a woman.

You are allowed your.. pastimes. I cannot fault you for them. And if you were there to help someone, then that is an honorable goal.

Elves do not have the same practices as other races it seems. We only ever have one... person we are intimate with. The... act binds us.

So a place like that goes against the very nature of our... being. That is why Lindir must never know. the shock would be too great for him.

Just the once? I guess if you live forever, you have a while to get it right the first time.

It isn't so much a pasttime. The woman I was in love with is dead, and it is my fault it happened. If I don't want to be alone, it's easier that way. Someone gets paid and I get company.

We do not do that. That is, it is not permitted. We are only ever allowed one marriage and if that person dies then we do not seek out another.

To us? It is not the same as love. It's a different thing.

We never shared more than a kiss on the cheek and good conversation, but we loved each other. I think maybe if she had not been taken there would have been more.

Maybe it was better without it for us. I never thought of her like that, other than she was pretty.

[She is perplexed at first by what he is describing. She barely knows what love is herself, so she cannot question that.]

So your people then, they can be with someone even if they do not love one another? And you can love someone-- in that sense, and not marry them?

Many marriages end in divorce. We can fall in love and we can leave it. And many marriages are still arranged, meant for making joined family power or controlling money rather than love.

Divorce? Arranged marriages? [So much confusion.So, much.]

We only ever marry for love. Our parents might deny the union for whatever reason, but if two elves are set, they may still wed. As I said.. marriage for us is in the... [This is where she turns very pink.] consummation. It is not a cultural thing but the entwining of our souls.

[Annnnd she meant that literally too.]

Maybe it is that we just simply do not have any souls.

[He is completely serious and honestly believes that of people. After the war, he can't imagine it.]

[Wait, what?] But you must. It is said that the souls of men venture on wards where even Eru does not know.

Maybe humans in your world are different. After seeing them do some of the things I've seen, I can't think of it.
