[Linda is sitting on a bench in the garden when she activates the feed. she's dressed casually in a coat and jeans, though her right hand visibly has a bandage around it. she looks tired, and she's obviously fallen in some mud at some point today as well]

Anybody else having trouble learning to ride their animals? [there's weariness in her tone. but a thought occurs to her then, and she adds:] Are many people going to be in the race? I know it's optional.

[while the mud is a result of her rocky attempts to learn to ride a "yoshi," her burned hand isn't. it's been a busy day, starting with testing forcefields with Agent K to try to find one like the dome followed by her riding session on the farm. needless to say, relaxing for a bit chatting with friends strikes her as a good way to end an exhausting day]

Me. I am having trouble.

[And he is riding in it. Hooray.]

You look pretty tired.

Niko! [she lights up at the sight of him. it's been a while since they last talked] What do they have you riding?

[at that, she sighs] It's been a long day. [and, making a face, she adds:] And I don't think the yoshi at the farm likes me riding him.

A big yellow bird thing.

Honestly it's easier than sliding around in bowling balls, though. [Which is the last time they talked.]

[that description makes her picture Big Bird. sadly, she wouldn't put it past this place] Weird. What are those called?

Ugh, don't remind me! At least it's not something like that. [because the race sounds a lot less destructive, for a start]

A chocobo. It's a bird. I mean, it is meant for riding but I don't know how the shit to do it, so it might as well be a dinosaur.

[But then again a Yoshi is too, they're just at the bottom of the learning curve.]

Never heard of it. [at his mention of a dinosaur, she makes a face] So you've seen yoshis, huh?

[because she assumes that's why he mentioned one, rather than just using an idiom]

I saw dinosaurs at the farm. You don't have to ride one of those, do you?

[He never had video games. He has no idea what she's in for. Or what he is, for that matter.]

Yeah. I do.

[Linda's never really been into video games, so she doesn't recognize the reference either. her expression is exasperated, though. so far, she's not enjoying the reality]

Mine is a big chicken. Not really a chicken, but it makes me think of a chicken.

I guess it is not that different from the dinosaurs in how it walks.

[Linda tilts her head thoughtfully] Yeah, I think I saw those at the farm, too. If it's what I think it is, big is right! But at least it shouldn't be too hard to stay on.

[because the back of a yoshi is slightly less rider-friendly than she would like]

It is harder to stay on than a motorcycle, I can tell you that.

[she winces on his behalf] Sorry. Hopefully with some practice we'll both be able to start going somewhere that isn't straight back onto the ground.

Maybe we could practice some together. If nothing else, we would have something good to laugh at.

[she smiles at that suggestion] You know, that's not a bad idea. When do you think you'll go back next?

You made it back.

Yeah, I shot things for a little bit but then hid in a hole before I could be blown up again or run out of bullets.

And then I went home to make sure everything was actually all healed up.

Did most of the rest go okay?

Found the witch. Dead.

Like a long time dead or new stinky dead?

Skeleton. At least three weeks, and intact - so, not a creeper.

Bellic, do you reincarnate or something?

I'm just very good at surviving. That was nothing compared to some things I live through.

Maybe she died long ago, but was kept safe because the swamps are strange. Not many could get past those monsters, and her house didn't show during the day.

...Now that's handy. I wonder how she did that.

It was more that it was lit up at night. With the trees, we could not see it. And there were voices trying to tell us not to go that direction. I don't think she wanted to be found.

[Though hearing Kate really did mess with him.]
