This is headline news:
➥On M8 D14 we, as a village, had the misfortune to discover that our moderately safe home was actually more than moderately dangerous. Skeletal archers were activated from an ancient spawner, unlike any discovered before.
Previous spawners discovered in the ruins of quadratus seemed uniquely dedicated to the production of items out of raw source materials, and utilizing the old technology they've provided excellent additions to technical and culinary applications. If the right materials are available, food shortages and emergency repairs are no longer an issue.
Prior to the discovery of Spawner #001 researchers had assumed that the defense system of the ancient civilization had not been very advanced. They were exclusively traders and, having no reason for warfare or widespread eradication of their own species, only developed weaponry as advanced as swords and arrows. It is now suspected that spawners were used for something else alongside producing miscellaneous supplies: they also produced defensive weapons meant to push out invaders. Considering that the skeletons resemble their death god, it isn't out of the realm of possibility that they intended for the androids to be a population control for themselves as well.
Spawner #001 has now been destroyed and additional lighting fixtures have been added throughout the town, driven by hydro-electric power. While skeletal archers still appear outside the village at night, they no longer appear within the town. It is recommended that no one exit the town after dark, as the numbers of hostiles at night have dramatically increased. Creepers disappear during the day, the spiders become docile, and the skeletons are negatively affected by the sunlight and smolder and fail. Despite this, people shouldn't leave the village's grounds during the day without adequate safety protocols.
➥Originally, our imported guests were outsiders, but now that they are an integral part of the community rather than a tourist interest, import security officers will be placed in the same uniforms as the rest of security.
➥Pet owners have noted how much canids like to chew the bones of the archers, and now that veterinarians have confirmed it doesn't harm the animals it is a permitted (and recommended) way of disposing remains. Local fertilizer businesses are also interested in purchasing bulk stock.
Bounties also remain on spider eyes, for those that bring them in as evidence that they succeeded in a kill. While the danger remains, some people with exceptional skill (or exceptional patience) can make a living from clearing out the threat. Payment and job availability will likely be increasing, and it may become an additional task given to Security's Manhunter division.
➥In further news related to the incident, it seems that the spawner (and as a side effect many other spawners) were activated on purpose by a local citizen. If anyone has any information regarding the case, they are asked to report it to the Quadratus Security Station.
➥With tourism at a standstill, and the town still focusing on its reclamation efforts, two imported reporters are offering their services in creating a documentary. They are convinced that showing the heart of the community could help appeal to the better nature of citizens everywhere in the universe and aid in petition efforts to lift the quarantine. Eventually, Blackway could serve as an introduction station for refugees from alien worlds and alternate timelines who are seeking out new homes.
Blackstaff has agreed to cooperate with the journalists in filming a documentary, and are planning to reward participants. In the meantime, now that the bulk of reconstruction and recovery has been completed, research efforts will be renewed as the museum is convinced that the planet may yield many other important discoveries. Such discoveries may also offer Blackway leverage for having the quarantine lifted. Lifting the quarantine is imperative to the village, especially for receiving certain medical supplies.
